People who rely on the buses to get around Grand Rapids can be at ease for a while -- 12 years to be exact.

The transit millage renewal passed tonight. It received more than 22,000 "yes" votes. The initiative won by around 8,200 votes.

The millage will add more than $15 million to The Rapid’s operating budget over 12 years.

It is unclear how this will affect contract negotiations between The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 836 and The Rapid’s board.

Union members have recently protested the millage in order to get a contract they believe is more fair. Union members have been working without a contract for over two years.
