What's really behind the selfie obsession?

Just a few years ago, we had never even heard the word "selfie".

These days, our social media feeds are filled with them. And that's sparked conversations and questions: Are they ridiculous? Are they little more than a deep dive into narcissism? Are they important ways to record our lives?

Kimberly Springer, Michigan Radio's social media producer, joined us to talk about why "selfies" matter – or not.

"This isn't something that's necessarily new, wanting to look at ourselves and see what we look like to the world."

"It's a way of captioning ourselves on social media. So, it's a way of creating punctuation," said Springer.

Stateside is produced daily by a dedicated group of producers and production assistants. Listen daily, on-air, at 3 and 8 p.m., or subscribe to the daily podcast wherever you like to listen.
