A Tribute to Abbey Lincoln Ft. Jazz Vocalist Sky Covington
The Preservation of Jazz Monday Night Music Series proudly presents a powerful and deeply soulful Tribute to Abbey Lincoln, performed by Detroit’s own Sky Covington, on Monday, December 8, 2025, at Aretha’s Jazz Café.
This elegant and emotional concert will celebrate the legacy of one of jazz’s most fearless and influential vocalists, composers, and truth-tellers.
About Abbey Lincoln
Abbey Lincoln (1930–2010) was a legendary jazz vocalist, actress, composer, and civil rights advocate known for her unmistakable tone, poetic lyricism, and uncompromising artistic voice.
She rose to prominence in the late 1950s and 1960s, collaborating with jazz giants including Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, Coleman Hawkins, Eric Dolphy, and Benny Golson.
Her groundbreaking album “We Insist! Freedom Now Suite” became a defining artistic statement of the Civil Rights Movement. Lincoln’s music combined profound emotional honesty, blues-rooted storytelling, and a spiritual depth that set her apart.
In her later years, she emerged as one of jazz’s great elder sages, writing timeless originals and inspiring generations of vocalists with her authenticity, wisdom, and fire.
Abbey Lincoln wasn’t just a singer —
she was a voice of truth, liberation, and artistic courage.
