Summer Carillon Concert: Eric Whitmer & Sono Trio

Summer Carillon Concert: Eric Whitmer & Sono Trio

Sono Trio and Eric Whitmer will perform the 2024 carillon summer series finale with works for carillon, flute, and clarinet followed by a selection of solo works performed by Whitmer. Sono Trio is Abrielle Scott, flute, Olivia Harrison, clarinet, and Eric Whitmer, percussion. The trio met and formed at Vanderbilt University as a part of the Contemporary Music Ensemble. They were the ensemble in residence at the 2022 Cortona Sessions for New Music. Comprised of three distinct voices, Sono Trio represents the various interests and passions of its members. Abrielle is a Master’s student at the University of Miami. Olivia just finished her Master’s degree at the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University. Eric is currently a Musicology Ph.D. Pre-Candidate at U-M and resident carillonist at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church.

Sono Trio seeks to explore and interrogate the mundane profundities of daily life. They champion a spirit of “play” as a radical act of community formation and philosophical inquiry. Sono views “play” as a central tenet of creativity and seeks to use this play as a methodology for self-reflection. As they play together, they invite their audiences, their collaborators, and their communities to playfully engage with them and their musical expression.

Summer carillon concerts are free and open to all, including to families and their pets. The music happens rain or shine. Please note that concerts are scheduled on both Central and North Campus, so plan your commute accordingly. When you arrive, take a program from the stand near the tower and have a seat outdoors wherever you like, or bring your own lawn chair or blanket (even your own picnic!). Concert staff wearing nametags will be available to answer questions or direct you to accessible restrooms and other facilities. For best acoustics, sit far enough away from the tower to have a direct line of sight to the bells.
