Detroit Zoo to hold public forum on noise complaints

The Woodward Spine

Neighbors of the Detroit Zoo are complaining about the noise -- and it's not the lions, the tigers, or the bears that they have a problem with.

It's the noise produced by the summer crowds the zoo brings in, various night-time events like concerts, and loudspeakers playing prehistoric dinosaur noises.

At the suggestion of the Oakland County Commissioner, the Detroit Zoo will be holding a public forum tonight at 6 p.m. to hear from residents.

Bill Laitner of the Free Press reports:

Oakland County Commissioner Helaine Zack, D-Huntington Woods, said she met last year with zoo officials to discuss noise and other concerns of residents, then suggested "more dialogue -- the goal is to resolve the issues." "I love the zoo. I literally live around the block from the zoo, so I hear the animals and I walk by there all the time. We all want to be good neighbors," Zack said.

The forum will take place at the Ford Education Center at the zoo.
