For the time being, the state will be closing the field hospital at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. That’s due to a decrease in the number of COVID-19 cases requiring hospitalization in the region.
The convention center was announced as a location for a field hospital in April, and housed 16 COVID-19 patients during its time as an alternate care facility. Workers from Ascension Michigan worked at the alternative care center. The last patient was discharged on June 11th, and the facility will officially be in pause mode this Friday.
Michelle Grinnell of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation said in a statement:
“As was the case with TCF Regional Care Center, this is a pause versus a closure, with SCS Regional Care Center standing ready to receive patients again if the need arises throughout the state. Ultimately, it is the best scenario possible for Michigan that Stay Home, Stay Safe efforts, the continued practice of social distancing, an economic reopening strategy based on data, and the incredible efforts of our health care providers have ensured as we are in a position to pause the SCS Regional Care Center, even as we remain ready for whatever may come next.”
Other alternative care facilities and field hospitals have closed in Southeast Michigan as the number of COVID-19 cases needing hospitalization decreased. The TCF center in Detroit stopped accepting patients in early May, and the last patient was discharged May 6.
