Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has lengthened her stay-at-home order through May 15, while relaxing restrictions so some businesses can reopen and the public can participate in more outdoor activities like golf and motorized boating.
The measure is designed to help combat the coronavirus pandemic. It immediately replaces one that was scheduled to expire May 1.
The governor's order says people are now required to face coverings in enclosed public spaces such as grocery stores if they can medically tolerate it. The governor is also requiring all employers to provide masks to their workers.
“When you go to the grocery store or to the pharmacy or to any store that’s open at this time, you need to wear a face mask,” Whitmer said.
Landscapers, lawn-service companies, plant nurseries and bike repair shops can resume operating, subject to social-distancing rules. Big-box retailers no longer have to close off garden centers and areas dedicated to selling paint and carpet.
“The new executive order will now allow some workers who perform lower risk activities to back on the job. We will consider this the preliminary stage of economic engagement,” Whitmer said.
Michigan currently has the seventh highest number of COVID-19 cases in the U.S. As of April 23, the state had 35,252 cases and 2,977 deaths.
The governor warned if there are signs the COVID-19 pandemic is worsening, she might have to restore some restrictions.
