The U.S. job market showed more signs of weakness Friday, as the Labor Department reported just 22,000 jobs added in August. Revised figures show the economy lost jobs in June, for the first time since the pandemic winter of 2020.

The state’s unemployment rate dipped in June for the second month in a row to 5.3%, according to the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget’s monthly jobs report.Health services showed the biggest month-to-month job gains, along with construction and government services. The biggest month-to-month losses were in professional/business services and manufacturing.

In a June 26th speech, Democratic Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin outlined what she described as a new vision for the Democratic Party. She discussed what she calls an economic war plan to combat the lack of economic security and shrinking middle class.

Leaders from both major political parties have been working to bring back manufacturing. But American manufacturers say they are struggling to fill the manufacturing jobs we already have.
