Detroit's M-1 Rail project picks contractor to build streetcars

M-1 Rail

A Pennsylvania-based company will design, build and safety test streetcars for Detroit's light rail system.

Officials with the M-1 rail project said the $32 million  deal with Brookeville Equipment Corp. includes spare parts and support services for six vehicles.

Each three-vehicle trolley will be able to carry 125 passengers along a 3.3 mile stretch of Woodward Ave.

The vehicles will be wireless which, project officials say, will help to minimize the rail system's impact on the avenue's aesthetic value.

Brookeville provided streetcars for Dallas Area Rapid Transit which uses a system similar to the one planned for Detroit.

The vehicles are expected to be delivered near the end of 2016.
