The city of Flint is launching a coordinated campaign to attack blight.
Mayor Sheldon Neeley says illegal dumping is a prime target.
“We’re not the garbage can of Genesee County,” says Neeley. “And no longer will we tolerate those type of activities here in the city of Flint.”
The city will go after businesses and people who illegally dump trash with fines and jail time.
Flint officials say they will help landowners cited by the city to clean up their properties.
As part of the city's anti-blight campaign, Flint police officers and neighborhood safety officers will step up efforts to catch illegal dumping.
Interim police chief Phil Hart says it’s part of an overall strategy to combat crime in Flint.
“If we tolerate dumping, we’ll tolerate anything,” says Hart. “And we’re not going to tolerate it anymore.”
The city plans to seek fines of up to $500 and up to 90 days in jail against illegal dumpers.
