Macomb County Circuit Court judges have picked a prosecutor’s office veteran to fill in as county prosecutor.

The circuit court bench met via Zoom on Wednesday, and chose Jean Cloud as interim prosecutor to replace resigned former prosecutor Eric Smith.

Cloud has been chief trial attorney for the office since 2015. Before that, she headed the Child Protection Unit.

Smith resigned in March. He’s been criminally-charged by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office after a months-long investigation.

The charges stem from an alleged scheme that siphoned at least $600,000 from civil asset forfeiture funds over the years. Smith and three charged co-conspirators allegedly spent the money on personal items and campaign expenditures.

Cloud will serve until Macomb County voters choose a new prosecutor in November.
