A Michigan judge has issued a preliminary injunction to stop the state from spending roughly $645 million from a past budget cycle.

After a formal opinion from the Michigan attorney general undid Republican budget cuts, the GOP is asking a judge to allow the cuts to go forward temporarily while they argue in court that they should be permanent.

House Republicans are promising to cut what they describe as wasteful spending in the next state budget as they name Appropriations Committee leadership and introduce new “transparency reforms.”

In the House, Rep. Angela Witwer will chair the Appropriations Committee. On the Senate side, Senator-elect Sarah Anthony will hold the chair position.
