Detroit MI.- Woodbridge Pub | Unlimited Sky Production | Preservation of Jazz Jazzy Sundays Outside Summer Music Series, Concert & Jam Session. This weekly event will be Hosted and featured by multi-Detroit Music Award recipient Sky Covington Ft. Club Crescendo Terrance Neal on Drums, Phil Hale on Keys and Ibrahim Jones on Bass. The jam session starts on the second set.

Woodbridge Pub has a great menu… cash bar and a great staff. Also, excited to announce the new performance stage and outside ambience across the street from the Pub. Enjoy Jazz, cocktails and dinner under the stars. Although table and benches are available, feel free to bring your own lawn chairs

Sky Covington (skycovington.net) will also be collecting backpacks and school supplies all summer. Feel free to donate every Sunday night from 12 p - 12 a. Simply drop off your backpacks, school supplies and school uniforms in the Hug Detroit Day Drive box at the front entrance.

Grab a drink and a brush and follow along as we walk you, step-by-step, through the evening’s featured painting.

Events run for approximately 2-3 hours with FREQUENT sip breaks. You will leave with a painting that is uniquely yours, and you’ll be amazed at the art you can bring to life.

Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes, campaign pins and ribbons, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.

As you look at the items in this exhibit, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And, most of all, who counted as a voter, and who did the counting?

On view September 11-December 22, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

Bookseller and collector Garrett Scott joins Julia Miller and Clements Curator of Books Emi Hastings to discuss the Garrett Scott Collection of Vernacular Bindings recently acquired by the Clements Library.

Scott’s working definition of “vernacular binding” is “an alteration or addition to the book, pamphlet, or leaf, when this alteration is made by an owner whose vocation is not bookbinding or associated book arts, when this modification is meant to enhance, protect, repair, or reinforce the structure of the item.”

Panelist Julia Miller is a bookbinding scholar and conservator who authored “Books Will Speak Plain: A Handbook for Identifying and Describing Historical Bindings.” As Curator of Books, Emi Hastings now oversees the Scott Collection. They will discuss different types of repairs and what these traces of ownership teach us.
