The Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has contacted two companies regarding a collapsed dock site on the Detroit River, calling their response "inadequate." The dock originally collapsed in November, and potentially contaminated soil has been eroding into the river.
Revere Dock LLC owns the dock and Detroit Bulk Storage, Inc., leased the dock to store aggregate piles. EGLE sent each company a letter expressing concerns about the responses to the collapse.
The state said the five-foot silt marine barrier installed to contain silt and sediment does not fully surround the area of bank failure. In addition, the southern part of the bank collapse is not adequately protected from erosion.
The state also noted the presence of a sinkhole near the area. The sinkhole is “developing rapidly in size” and EGLE is concerned it is allowing contaminated soil to enter the river. In addition, EGLE “has serious concerns that the sinkhole may ultimately collapse into the Detroit River.”
The state has given the two companies until January 24 to come up with a new temporary plan.
Neither Revere Dock LLC nor Detroit Bulk Storage Inc. could be reached for comment at the time of publishing.
