Michigan Radio wins two PRNDI Awards for Nassar coverage

Michigan Radio was recognized with two awards from the Public Radio News Directors Inc. (PRNDI) this past weekend for the station’s 2018 news reporting. The station won First Place in the Podcast category for “Believed” and Second Place in the Nationally Edited Continuing Coverage category for its overall reporting of the Larry Nassar case.

“Believed” is an award winning podcast collaboration from Michigan Radio and NPR that sought to share the stories of the survivors and families impacted by Larry Nassar’s victimization of young women and athletes over a span of more than 20 years. Michigan Radio began covering the sexual abuse case of the former Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics team physician in the fall of 2016.

Michigan Radio was one of only two public radio stations in Michigan to be recognized with a PRNDI Award. WKAR-FM received Second Place in the News/Public Affairs Program category for “MSU's Moment of Reckoning.” Michigan Radio competes in Division AA, which is for public radio stations with news staffs of 16 or more.

Public Radio News Directors Incorporated is a non-profit professional association that exists to improve local news and information programming by serving public radio journalists across the United States. Their annual awards honor the best work being done by local public radio stations across the country.  The awards were presented this past weekend at PRNDI’s annual conference in Washington, D.C.

Steve is Michigan Public's Marketing Director. His job involves coordinating the station’s marketing, communication and public relations efforts, special events, car donation program and community & media partnerships.
