Michigan Radio Wins National Murrow Award

Michigan Radio has been awarded a National Edward R. Murrow Award for its feature Exposed to lead in infancy, now Flint’s youngest students face challenges in school. It was given the honor in the Large Market Radio - Hard News category.

Exposed to lead in infancy, now Flint’s youngest students face challenges in school,” is a feature report looking at the rise in the number of young special needs students five years after the Flint water crisis and the everyday challenges for these children, both inside and outside the classroom. The feature was written and produced by reporter Kate Wells and editor Sarah Hulett. It originally aired in December 2019. You can listen to the story here.

The Murrow Awards are presented by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) to honor outstanding achievements in radio, television and digital journalism. The Murrow Awards are the embodiment of the values, principles and standards set forth by Edward R. Murrow, a journalism pioneer who set the standards for the highest quality of broadcast journalism.

Michigan Radio competes in the Large Market Radio category, which consists of both public and commercial radio stations across the country. Michigan Radio was the only news outlet in Michigan to win a National Murrow Award.  In addition to Michigan Radio’s award, NPR also won six Murrow awards in the Radio Network category. A complete list of winners can be found here

National winners from each category, including television, radio, and digital news, were announced at the 2020 Edward R. Murrow Awards event on October 10, 2020. The event was held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The station was previously presented with regional Murrow awards in the Multimedia, Hard News, News Documentary and News Series categories earlier this year.

The Radio Television Digital News Association is the world's largest professional organization devoted exclusively to electronic journalism. RTDNA has been honoring excellence in journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971, and the Murrow Awards are among the most respected journalism awards in the world.
