Legislation that would assign letter grades to schools based on student performance could move forward this week in Lansing.
The Michigan Department of Education recently released its new school accountability system, which uses color-codes to rate schools. But many state lawmakers say that system is too confusing for most parents and educators.
Rep. Lisa Lyons (R-Alto) says she introduced House Bill 5112, “so that our parents know exactly what kind of quality school they have in their area, and so that our schools know exactly what their expectations are so they can go out and meet them.”
Lyons also chairs the state House Education Committee, which is scheduled to hold two hearings on the legislation this week.
Some lawmakers say the state needs to be careful moving forward with a new school accountability system. They say it should be spearheaded by education experts, not politicians.
