Michigan nurses have announced their support of Governor Whitmer’s use of executive powers. Republican legislators sued the governor last week, alleging that her extension of the stay-at-home orders was unlawful.

Now, the Michigan Nurses Association has filed an amicus brief in the case showing their support for the governor.

Jamie Brown is with the Michigan Nurses Association. She says nurses have a stake in the Gov. Whitmer maintaining her power and keeping the stay at home orders in place.

“As nurses in Michigan, we are seeing many people die from COVID-19. The only reason the curve is starting to flatten is because of the stay at home orders that the governor has enacted.”

Brown says at least 21 frontline healthcare workers in the state have died because of coronavirus exposure.

“Until you actually experience a family member dying it’s not going to hit you as personally as it is the healthcare workers right now. We’re the ones taking care of these patients and they aren’t making it and there is nothing we can do to stop it.”

She says she understands people’s frustration with staying home - but it’s a matter of life and death for healthcare workers.
