I GOT IT FROM MY MAMA: Prepare a five-minute story about what runs in the family. From memorized Sunday sauces to generational trauma wrapped in questionable traditions. Explore our motherly ties and those before them that shape our worldview and make you, you.
George Lopez’s multi-faceted career encompasses television, film, stand-up comedy, literature, and late-night television. Lopez has broken ground for Latino comics by embracing his ethnicity, confronting racial stereotypes, and fighting for his community on and off the stage.
Lopez created, starred in, produced and wrote for multiple television shows loosely based on his life and family. These included Lopez vs Lopez, featuring his real-life daughter, Mayan, as well as the groundbreaking hit sitcom George Lopez. The latter of the two ran for six seasons on ABC and remains a hit with viewers on both broadcast stations and Nick at Nite. Lopez has also lent his voice to a string of hit animated films, including Smurfs and Beverly Hills Chihuahua.
In May 2004, Lopez’s autobiography Why You Crying? became a New York Times Bestseller. More recently, he released the third installment of his middle-grade novel series, ChupaCarter and the Curse of La Llorona. The series blends humor, folklore, friendship, and mystery.
An icon and advocate for Latino representation, Lopez was the focus of the award-winning documentary Brown is the New Green: George Lopez and the American Dream. In 2005, Time named him one of the 25 Most Influential Hispanics in America and the Harris Poll named him one of the Top Ten Favorite Television Personalities. The following year, Lopez received a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He is currently performing stand-up across the country on his comedy tour.

The students of Andy Murphy’s POLISCI 495 course co-curated the exhibition “Revolutionary Paine” to document the whirlwind caused by its publication. On view at the Clements January 16-May 8, weekdays from 12-4 pm.
