The Stamelos Gallery Center is proud to present Frames of Reference, Past and Present: Selected Works by Anita Bates, a survey of the artist’s past and present artwork.

You’re invited to the Michigan League for Public Policy’s 2026 Champions for Kids event, which will be held on Thursday, September 17 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in Lansing, Michigan. The event will mark the official launch of the 2026 Kids Count in Michigan Data as well as a special report on Michigan's young adults. It will also serve as a place where we can come together to explore strategies that will help improve outcomes for Michigan’s kids and families. As a participant, you'll be the first to learn about the latest findings related to child well-being in Michigan and will hear about how we can work together to address the most pressing needs of our state’s kids and families using solutions that promote racial equity and economic justice. The event also provides valuable networking opportunities with policymakers, funders, advocates and community members.

Additionally, the event will feature a panel of experts who are dedicated to making Michigan a place where kids are able to grow up with optimism and opportunity. This year’s panelists will include Melissa Kiesewetter, president of Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College; Arabia Simeon, founder and CEO of POGO; and Dr. Daniel Williams, president and CEO of the Steelcase Foundation. The 2026 Champion for Kids Award will also be presented to the Michigan Organization on Adolescent Sexual Health (MOASH) for their work to lift up youth voices, respect and celebrate their identities, and advance youth sexual health in Michigan.

The League is honored to host this special event for its many partners, colleagues and stakeholders across our great state who are working tirelessly to improve outcomes for the children who call Michigan home. Please reserve your spot at the luncheon today.

Dorm dinners and late night snacks with friends and roommates have been a major part of the college experience for generations of students. At U-M this has been true since its founding, and in the early 1900s the most memorable meals were formal banquets hosted by student organizations. Join us and Professor Lisa Young to learn about these banquets and how they created a sense of belonging for Michigan’s community that lasted long after graduation.

Lisa Young is the Volney H. Jones Collegiate Lecturer in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Michigan. Long interested in the history of food systems in human society she has worked on archaeological digs in the southwestern United States and researched extensively on the history of food at U-M. She attended Michigan as an undergraduate and received her Ph.D. from the University of Arizona.

Historian and author of "Canal Dreamers: The Epic Quest to Connect the Atlantic and Pacific in the Age of Revolutions," Jessica M. Lepler walks us through the failed idea to build the world’s first interoceanic canal.

In the 1820s, there was a little-known dream to unite the world by building a waterway between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. As Spanish American nations declared independence and new canals intensified US expansion and British industrialization, many imagined the construction of an interoceanic canal as predestined.

Although the idea of literally changing the world by connecting the oceans proved too revolutionary for the Age of Revolution, the quest itself changed history. Canal dreams prompted political transformations, financial crisis, recognition of new countries, concern about climate change, and more. Full of adventure, corruption, far-reaching consequences, and present-day parallels, Lepler’s absorbing narrative cuts through two centuries, revealing that dreams do not need to come true to make history.
